About the Author
Beth Osnes is Assistant Professor at the Department of Theatre and Dance, University of Colorado, US. She was recipient of the Chancellor¹s Committee on Women Awards, University of Colorado, 2009. She is co-founder of Mothers Acting Up, an international movement to inspire and mobilize mothers to advocate on behalf of the world’s children. In partnership with the Philanthropiece Foundation, Beth is currently touring her (M)other Tour, which consists of an original one-woman performance and workshop for vocal empowerment, to locations across North America and parts of Southeast Asia and Latin America.

About the Author

Ruth Illman is Director of the Donner Institute for Research in Religious and Cultural History, associated to Åbo Akademi University in Åbo, Finland. She is committed to research on interreligious dialogue and the role of the arts in this dialogue, cultural encounters and peace research. She is also the editor-in-chief of the international peer-reviewed journal Temenos. Nordic Journal of Comparative Religion. Illman has published widely in international journals such as the International Journal of Public Theology, the Journal of Contemporary Religion, and Studies in Interreligious Dialogue. W. Alan Smith is Professor of Religion and Philosophy at Florida Southern College. An ordained minister, he has been active in regional and general levels of work in the denomination as well as in higher education. About the Author
John Bunyan was an English Christian writer and preacher who is best known for his allegorical novel The Pilgrim' s Progress, published in 1678. Bunyan' s faith was profoundly influenced by two books owned by his wife: Arthur Dent's Plain Man's Pathway to Heaven and Lewis Bayly's Practice of Piety, and he turned to preaching following the death of his guide and mentor, John Gifford. The restoration of the monarchy of Charles II of England marked England' s return to Anglicanism, and Bunyan' s freedom to preach was curtailed. He was arrested numerous times for preaching without a licence, and was finally imprisoned for the offence in November 1660. Bunyan was released from prison in January 1672 and resumed preaching (as permitted under the Declaration of Religious Indulgence) until his death in 1688.

The last, fascinating chapter examines Dee's motives for believing so strongly in the truth of the Actions and suggests that a principal motive was the conviction, not held by Dee alone, that a new age was about to dawn upon earth.

Every doglover will be swept away by this captivating audiobook of John Muir's adventure with STICKEEN. I had never known the story before I listened to the tape, and I was completely captivated by the bravery and heart of STICKEEN - and by the voice of Lee Salisbury. John Muir's words capture the innate goodness of EVERY dog - and somehow explains why we can't help but love them so!! I bought 5 copies to send to my dog loving friends, and I'm sure I'll be buying more! This is a story you'll want to share with everyone who loves animals.

Beautifully written

I first met Stickeen by reading an exerpt on a Pomeranian calendar. I immediately went to Amazon to get the book. It is a thrilling and emotional testamony by John Muir of his most memorable day on a glacier with a brave little dog. It is a story you just can't put down and by the end you love and admire Stickeen as much as Muir. I did some research and found that John Muir worked on this story for decades perfecting every word. He considered it his most important work because it showed the dog Stickeen as an emotional and thinking being therefore requiring mankind to consider how we treat our canine companions.

is great reading just for the adventure. But in the telling,
Muir shows us that our "horizontal brothers" are not
merely intelligent, but share many of the emotions,

The Idea of the Cottage in English Architecture is a history of the late Georgian phenomenon of the architect-designed cottage and the architectural discourse that articulated it. It is a study of small buildings built on country estates, and not so small buildings built in picturesque rural settings, resort towns and suburban developments.

At the heart of the English idea of the cottage is the Classical notion of retreat from the city to the countryside. This idea was adopted and adapted by the Augustan-infused culture of eighteenth-century England where it gained popularity with writers, artists, architects and their wealthy patrons who from the later eighteenth century commissioned retreats, gate-lodges, estate workers' housing and seaside villas designed to 'appear as cottages'.

The enthusiasm for cottages within polite society did not last. By the mid-nineteenth century, cottage-related building and book publishing had slowed and the idea of the cottage itself was eventually lost beneath the Tudor barge-boards and decorative chimneystacks of the Historic Revival. And yet while both designer and consumer have changed over time, the idea of the cottage as the ideal rural retreat continues to resonate through English architecture and English culture.

About the Author

Daniel Maudlin is Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Plymouth. He has previously held positions at Plymouth School of Architecture, Design and Environment, Dalhousie University, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Glasgow. From farmhouses in Nova Scotia to aristocratic retreats on English country estates, his work focuses on the social meanings of design and the consumption of domestic architecture in the early modern British Atlantic world. He also writes on architectural theory, modern vernaculars and the everyday.

About the Author

Ann Shearer is a Jungian analyst based in London. She lectures internationally and for two years was a Royal Literary Fund Writing Fellow at Imperial College London. Previously a journalist and consultant in social welfare, her many articles and ten books include (with Pamela Donleavy) From Ancient Myth to Modern Healing: Themis: goddess of heart-soul, justice and reconciliation (Routledge, 2008).
