Having won more than one recent poll as Britain’s best-loved building, the appeal of Durham Cathedral appears abiding, which begs the question whether an iconic sacred building can retain meaning and affective pertinence for contemporary, secular visitors. Using the example of Durham Cathedral, this book sets out to explore wherein the appeal of historic churches lies today and considers questions of how and why their preservation into a post-Christian era should be secured.
By including feedback from visitors to the cathedral, and the author’s own very personal account of the cathedral in the form of an ekphrasis, this work seeks to privilege an interpretation of architecture that is based on the individual experience rather than on more conventional narratives of architecture history and cultural heritage policy. Recognising the implication of our choice of narrative on the perceived value of historic churches is crucial when deliberating their future role.
This book puts forth a compelling case for historical sacred architecture, suggesting that its loss - through imperceptive conservation practices as much as through neglect or demolition - would diminish us all, secularists, atheists and agnostics included.

A book to be savoured
By Amazon Customer
This is a very fine work – I found I could only read so much at a time. Like a fine wine, it deserves to be savoured. The author offers plenty of food for thought on a non-believer's experience of great cathedrals (or any sacred space)... I know that when I stand in a cathedral (thinking of Notre Dame in Paris, or Canterbury Cathedral, or St. Étienne in Bourges), I am rendered speechless and even find it hard to budge from the spot where I connect with the place. I feel the energy of the building, but also the connection to the divine and the faith of those who built, maintained and continue to worship in it. Like natural wonders, great churches inspire awe in me. I loved reading the comments from visitors to Durham Cathedral in this book, and now feel that I must go there one day to experience it for myself.
This book is not only academically sound and eminently well written (and therefore a joy to read), but like a great cathedral, it is built with love and care and faith in something much bigger – something beyond our daily lives and thoughts. I found many, many sections to be filled with poetry and song – clearly, the author’s spirit was touched by Durham Cathedral and also by the many thinkers she refers to in her explorations.

“Essences and facts are incommensurable, and the one who begins with facts, will never end up with essences” said Jean Paul Sartre. Marie Clausén’s ekphrasis on Durham Cathedral certainly does give one the essence of this magnificent cathedral. Not inclined to just describe the church’s pillars, columns or capitals (though this is done in a marvellous way), this book truly gives one the feeling of being inside the cathedral and what might make it so special. This book is a thought provoking account of what makes Durham Cathedral sacred architecture and what its role might be (and that of other sacred spaces) in our increasingly secular age. Travellers, tourists and church crawlers will also be left to question what the cultural heritage industry is doing to heritage sites and what this may mean in the future. A highly enjoyable, well written and unusual academic book.
