Brilliant and profoundly illuminating

There are two kinds of scholarly works: those that take one or more aspects of a work and apply them, elaborate on them, and--most often--ultimately critique them and find them wanting here and there; and then there are those exceeding rare scholarly works that actually bring understanding and interconnection and substance--in a word, enlightenment--to the whole of a thinkers opus; works that make you realize that you didn't really understand the thinker before.
This book--Time and Timelessness: Temporality in the theory of Carl Jung (Research in Analytical Psychology and Jungian Studies)--is of the latter kind, and books like this are few and far between.
I can vividly remember back when I was in college the response of one of my favorite professors when asked by my girlfriend if she could write a paper on the novel, The Mosquito Coast, for our Nietzsche seminar. The parallels to Nietzsche's thought in the novel were remarkable, she said, and proceeded to give many examples that indicated that Theroux had probably intentionally made use of some of Nietzsche's ideas. The professor then astonished me by saying that it all depended on which way the water flowed: if the novel made us understand Nietzsche better or more deeply or differently--if the water flowed from the novel to the thinker--then, yes, she could write such a paper. But, if the paper was just an explication and application of what and how we kind of already understood from reading Nietzsche--if the water in her paper flowed from the thinker to the novel, then no, she could not. It may seem strange that I was so astonished by this response of his, but to me at the time, the idea that we would arrogate to ourselves such an incredible task at this point in our studies--to understand a thinker better, deeper, differently--was indeed astonishing. And yet, the more I thought about it the more sense just such an attitude made! It's not that you would abandon trying to learn more about the thinker via that writers own words, but that you would not presume that you already understood the thinkers ideas.
Sadly, however, this is exactly how so much criticism and scholarly effort proceeds. Rousseau's position on x, y, and z, is such and such (understandings presumed), so now let's apply this and see if it holds up and to what extent and where it needs abrogation or alteration. This is where the true arrogance lies. It lies in assuming that when (your understanding of) a thinkers position on something doesn't agree with your experience of reality that the problem lies in the thinkers position, which is just simply wrong, to one degree or another. Well, of course, it may be that simple. But it also may be that you don't truly and fully understand the thinker--and that it is your understanding, your interpretation, that is at fault. And in fact that is the better and less arrogant assumption to make, if you're going to make an assumption at all, in starting out. It is, however, very difficult to do this--to re-examine everything anew and to seek out and reveal a better, fuller, different, deeper, etc. understanding which was there all along and which raises the level of every readers understanding of the thinker.
This is a tall order! And this book delivers! More importantly, this book isn't about just one of Jung's ideas or concepts--it isn't a scholarly book focused narrowly on Synchronicity or the Psychoid Archetype or etc. No. It is a book which brings a profound understanding of the role and nature of "time" and "timelessness" throughout the entirety of Jung's thought, and in this case, that also happens to mean bringing a profound understanding of his entire psychology, for, to quote the book:
"Time can provide an illuminating factor through which key elements in his theory can be examined. I would even argue that, the common thread in Jung's conceptualizations is an underlying theory of temporality in the psyche. His `time theory' was the stage upon which his psychology unfolded."
If this is true--and I believe that it is--then this book would be of great benefit to anyone wishing to better and more fully understand Jung.
Personally, I have read a pretty good amount of Jung. Early on, in school, the obligatory "Man and his Symbols" of course, and chapters from "Memories, Dreams, Reflections" and Jung's essay "Answer to Job", then later Modern Library's "The Basic Writings of C.G. Jung" edited by V.S. de Laszlo, and most recently the entirety of vol. 8 of the collected works: "The Structure and Dynamics of the Psyche. And also Jung's wonderful preface to the I Ching.
So, not nearly what a Jung scholar would be able to list, but a pretty good amount for a "lay person"--and I can tell you unequivocally that Time and Timelessness has brought me so much insight and understanding and has weaved together that understanding into a fairly coherent whole, that I can safely say that page for page this book is an incredible power house! I just recently re-read the entire book from cover to cover in preparation for writing this review and it keeps on giving out this incredible gift of understanding. Seriously, I could, I will, and I should re-read it a third time. And then after that, re-read volume 8 of the collected works and then move on to volume 9 parts 1 and 2. Time and Timelessness especially helped me to understand the essay on Synchronicity at the end of vol 8 of the CW, and the essay prefacing the I Ching. Just a dramatic difference in my level of understanding. Before I couldn't have really explained the basics of Jung's thought in any kind of satisfactory way to someone else (or not in a way that satisfied me at any rate), despite all that I had read, and now I can at least make a pretty good attempt and feel good about the results.
In short, what I'm saying to you is, if you have read a decent amount of Jung--and especially if you are most intrigued by Jung's theory of Synchronicity--and you want to really understand it, then you would be very well served indeed to buy this book and read it at least twice.
Yes, it's not cheap--not by a long shot!--but in this case, it's worth it. If you're serious about understanding Jung then this book is a very good investment. Or go find it at your nearest college library and borrow it. Do it. Drive the hour or two if you need to. It is worth it. Or many local libraries have inter-library loan agreements and could maybe get it for you.
The short version: an awesome book; beg, borrow, steal, buy it--whatever--but read it.
Now for the longer version! (as if this review wasn't long enough):
Yiassemides divides Jung's writings into two phases: before Septem Sermones Ad Mortuous, and after. Septem Sermones Ad Mortuous was a work written by Jung under a pseudonym and in a poetic and gnostic language in which the dead Gnostic Basilides tries to give answers to dead Christian souls who come seeking for what they did not find in Jerusalem. This poetic format allowed Jung great freedom to explore ideas symbolically which would later provide the foundation for key elements of his theory. Also, if you liked "Answer to Job" you will love the description of this piece and the understanding which Basilides provides to the dead souls. I was so fascinated by this chapter that this work (Seven Sermons to the Dead) is next on my list of Jung to read!
(And, as an aside, that's another wonderful thing about this book: it is eminently readable! To say the least, not all scholarly works are readable. And some are downright un-readable, to be honest. Not so here, fortunately.)
And like all the best writing, it is not simply academic--it's the kind of stuff that makes you pause, put down the book, and realize things about your own life and how you lead it, and how you think about it. It matters. It's vital. It's relevant.
Chapter 2 continues the tale of the unfolding of Jung's time theory and brings in and introduces most of the key elements of Jung's theory which will be talked about later and which were all informed and shaped and made by what went before in phase one. More importantly, the nature of time and timelessness continues its fascinating revelation and presentation. Many connections are made, many distinctions are made. This is where the book really starts to get into the meat and substance of its subject material and where you really start to see just how profoundly far reaching and helpful this will be for an understanding of Jung.
Chapter 3 has by far the best discussion of Synchronicity I have ever read--here's a teaser:
"Synchronicity is arguably the most recognizable term of analytic psychology, and yet there has been virtually no methodical treatment of it. It is as if most writers are seduced, or perhaps inspired, by the implications of synchronicity, which point towards a non-statistical, non-rational, and for some, spiritual realm, and therefore leave behind its systematic and scholarly examination."
And it has of course so much more, including the Psychoid Archetype, discussions of "long range effects in time" such as telepathy, and discussions of teleology, causality, a-causality, etc. Also included is some fascinating material on the correspondence and relationship between Jung and physicist Pauli, which helped shape Jung's theory of Synchronicity. Really awesome stuff.
This review is already way too long, so I will suffice it to say that the rest of the book really brings it all together nicely (without being at all "neat" or "pat"), especially the final "Concluding Remarks".
Now, the point has come--the point has actually passed--where I need to disclose the fact that the author is a good friend of mine and that I was consulted during the writing of the book about some of the material dealing with physics to ensure that it was accurate and properly conveyed. I intended to put this disclosure front and center--and indeed I just re-read this review to see if I could fit it in there somewhere without it being too stiff and without it interrupting the flow--but it just doesn't work there. I'm sorry if this feels like a deception or something, only knowing at the end, but for what it's worth, I can assure you that I would not praise a book to the skies--any book, even one written by a dear friend or close relation--if it did not deserve it in my opinion. (I very probably would hold back from posting a negative review, however) Point is, this book is amazing and I would definitely have written a review of it, sooner or later, even if I didn't know the author at all and hadn't read some early drafts of some of the chapters. But, well, if you hold that bias can't be compensated for and overcome and so on, then, well, now you know and you can do with this information as you will.

From a non-Jungian

The author tackles complex Jungian concepts such as the role of time, synchronistic experiences, symbols and the psyche in a riveting manner that captivates the reader giving him insights and understanding that transcends him into deeper psychic spiritual realms. Eloquently written, interspersed with quotes from literature providing food for thought for hungry minds that are willing to take a 'glance' at the universe dispensing with the conventional constraints of causality and temporal linearity and finding meaning in the acausal through timelessness.

From a woman who loves to read on matters of the psyche

A beautiful journey through Carl Jung’s concepts such as synchronicity, meaning, time and the psyche. The book has an excellent flow with a magical sense of writing making it very interesting and easy to read when it comes to this kind of concepts that usually are difficult to comprehend. Throughout the book, I had the feeling that the author has thoroughly researched and carefully selected and shared these ideas in a beautiful order with the scope to lead us into an interesting finding. Highly recommended for anyone interested in matters of the psyche.
