Som Prakash Verma taught at the Centre of Advanced Study, Department of History, Aligarh Muslim University and was Tagore National Fellow (2010–12). At present, he is Senior Academic Fellow at the Indian Council of Historical Research, New Delhi. A stern judgment of Tirpitz

Herwig tells us that the phrase "luxury fleet", when uttered by Churchill in 1912, infuriated the Kaisier and the German people. The word "luxury" has a redolent, superfluous connotation when translated into German. Herwig presents a strong case that both the intended, and unintended, meanings were appropriate.

This book describes the foreign policy and strategic and tactical goals Tirpitz predicted with the building of a powerful surface fleet. The resulting naval program consumed staggering sums that grew from 20% (in 1898) to 55% (in 1911) of army levels. Herwig shows how this vast sum fell between 2 stools. Insufficient to wrest control of the North Sea from the British, it spent most of the war in harbor, while the mighty German Army fought the whole world and was defeated by the narrowest of margins.

The book is well-written, scholarly yet flowing, a very enjoyable history.

The German Imperial Navy

In this book professor Herwig offers more than a military history of the German Imperial Navy during Kaiser Wilhelm II's reign. The political reasons for creating such a strong navy are covered, as well as the role it played during World War I. However, what attracted me the most is the social aspect of this work. Professor Herwig explains which kind of people became officers of the German Navy and why (a topic he dealed with in a previous book: The German Naval Officers Corps). I believe this is most important, because it shows the reader the human part of the Kaiser's navy. The technical aspects in the evolution of naval warfare from 1870 until 1914 are also deeply analyzed in this text. This is a must read for all persons who are interested on this period's history.

Well written and very informative

Holger H. Herwig is perhaps the best English writing author of the Imperial Germany in the First World War. This, like all the other Herwig's book, is easy to read, never dull but still very accurate. The only flaw of this book is that it gives David Lloyd George the merit of being the father of the convoy system. That old story story invented by Lloyd George in his memories was exposed in 1989 by John Terraine in his Business in Great waters. On can't blame Herwig of that. This book would be of greater value with correct foot or end notes. I guess that some 95% of the readers don't mind of that so this is not very serious criticism of this great book.

About the Author

Dominique Hes is an academic at the University of Melbourne who has been asking: ‘Why, when we have been "doing" sustainability for so long, are we having an ever-increasing impact?’ People create such beauty with music, food, art, buildings and community, so why is it so difficult to be a thriving part of the earth’s systems? She has degrees in Science (Botany) from the University of Melbourne, Engineering (Cleaner Production) and a PhD in Architecture from RMIT University, Australia.

Chrisna du Plessis is Associate Professor in the Department of Construction Economics, University of Pretoria, South Africa, where she explores what concepts such as resilience and regenerative design would mean for how we think about urban sustainability and how we live our lives. She holds degrees in architecture from the University of Pretoria, a PhD from the University of Salford, UK and an honorary doctorate from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.

Design for Hope explores how emerging changes in people’s mindset and new approaches to design are working together to fundamentally impact the potential of our buildings and places. It looks beyond the limitations of isolated, incremental improvements, and paints a vivid image of how holistic consideration of buildings, people and nature is shaping a better future.

The authors include real world examples of how leading practitioners are applying this new paradigm all over the world. It is an excellent resource for designers, or for anyone who would like to know more about the potential of built environment for enabling communities and organisations in meaningful ways. Well done on a fantastic and important book.

For a change the Kindle book is a really good version of the book

Refreshingly different and based on thinking rather than emotions only.
The book is strong in setting a context for the reasons we need to consider new starting points for design. It explains why we need a new way of doing things carefully. Finally, it shows it is possible. It is not the end yet.
I own both Kindle and hardcopy. For a change the Kindle book is a really good version of the book. Get either.

It describes the impact of Green Exercise on human health and well-being through all stages of the lifecourse and covers a wide spectrum from cellular processes such as immune function through to facilitating human behavioural change. It demonstrates the value of Green Exercise for activity and education purposes in both schools and the workplace, as well as its therapeutic properties. Green Exercise is an effective intervention for vulnerable groups and promoting healthy ageing, with activities including wilderness therapy, therapeutic horticulture and the use of forests and water. Chapters also integrate cross-cutting key themes which are relevant to all stages of the lifecourse and have significantly contributed to the Green Exercise research base, such as forest bathing and blue exercise. 

The book also explores the future of Green Exercise, the way in which research can be used to influence green design and planning and how health, social care and environmental agendas can be integrated to enable Green Exercise to be more widely used as a mechanism for improving health.

Here lie the roots of violence and the lack of direction so conspicuously afflicting modern man and woman. Examples of PN, positive and negative, are given, lending the book an immediacy and practical character often lacking in studies of this kind.

In the new scientific approach here adopted, the divisions between matter and life, and life and mind, are discarded, and the old conflict between science and religion shown to belong to an out-of-date world view. The result is a radical reappraisal of the nature and function of religion and art, the two great psychic forces in history. Indeed, the present crisis is shown to originate in the psychic sphere rather than in the political and economic order. Deeply felt and elegantly written, yet not lacking in wit and humour, the book ends with some concrete ideas on how a more balanced culture may be achieved.
